Mr. Garrett teaching rhythm to young students

What the first month looks like.

Early lessons set up posture, the violin hold and the bow hold, then move to open strings with a clean, steady tone. Students then add fingers to play their first simple melodies. Plucking often comes before bowing, so students can focus on one skill at a time.

Skills your student builds.

  • Posture, violin hold and bow hold
  • Tone production and bow control
  • Finger placement and playing in tune
  • Reading treble clef
  • Counting and steady rhythm

Getting the right size violin.

Students should have their own correctly sized violin and bow. Violins come in fractional sizes, from very small instruments up to full size (4/4). Arm length decides the size, not age, so ask Mr. Garrett before you buy or rent. Many families rent at first, because students change sizes as they grow.

When to start violin lessons.

Mr. Garrett generally starts violin students from second grade up. Many Texas school districts begin orchestra in middle school, so private lessons before or alongside orchestra help students start strong and keep progressing.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Violin lessons: common questions.

Do private lessons help with school orchestra?

Yes. One-on-one time on posture, tone and reading helps students keep up in orchestra and prepare for chair placements and auditions.

Should we rent or buy a violin?

Renting is common while a student is still growing. Mr. Garrett can help you check that the size and setup are right.

Is it too late to start violin as a teen or adult?

No. Older beginners often move quickly because they can practice with more focus.
