Mr. Garrett helping a student with mandolin finger placement at home

What the first month looks like.

Students learn to hold the mandolin and pick, tune its paired strings, and play their first chords and simple melodies. The mandolin is tuned like a violin (G–D–A–E), so melodies sit comfortably under the fingers. Many beginners are playing a recognizable tune within the first few lessons.

Skills your student builds.

  • Pick control, including down-up picking and tremolo
  • Chord “chops” for rhythm playing
  • Folk, fiddle and dance tunes
  • Reading tab and standard notation
  • Playing along with other musicians

Choosing a mandolin.

Students should have their own mandolin. Mandolins are small, so one size fits most players. You will see A-style (teardrop) and F-style (with a decorative scroll) bodies; a well set-up A-style is a common and budget-friendly first instrument. Mr. Garrett can help you understand what to look for.

When to start mandolin lessons.

Mandolin’s short neck is comfortable for younger students with small hands. It is also popular with teens and adults who love folk, bluegrass and Celtic music. Violin players often pick it up quickly because the tuning is the same.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Mandolin lessons: common questions.

Is mandolin hard on the fingers?

The paired steel strings take a few weeks of regular practice to get used to. Fingertips toughen up quickly with short, regular sessions.

Does mandolin use the same tuning as violin?

Yes. Both are tuned G–D–A–E, so violin and mandolin skills support each other.

What styles can my student play?

Folk, bluegrass, Celtic and fiddle tunes are a natural fit, and the mandolin works in pop and rock too.
