Mr. Garrett and a student playing acoustic and electric guitars at home

What the first month looks like.

The first lessons cover how to hold the guitar and pick, how to tune, and a few open chords. By the end of the first month, most beginners can switch between two or three chords in time and strum along with a simple song. Students who already play start with a quick check-in on what they know, then pick up from there.

Skills your student builds.

  • Open chords and smooth chord changes
  • Strumming patterns and steady rhythm
  • Reading guitar tab, then standard notation when it fits the student’s goals
  • Single-note melodies and riffs
  • Electric basics like amp settings and palm muting, for students who play electric

Choosing the right guitar.

Students should have their own guitar. Guitars come in fractional sizes: many younger elementary students fit a 1/2-size, upper elementary students a 3/4-size, and most students from about age 12 a full-size instrument. Height and arm length matter more than age. Nylon-string guitars are gentler on new fingertips; steel-string acoustics and electrics work well too. Ask Mr. Garrett about size and a dependable beginner model before you buy.

When to start guitar lessons.

Guitar works well from about second grade, once a student’s hands can press the strings and they can practice for a few focused minutes at a time. Teens and adults start successfully all the time, and many come back to a guitar they put down years ago.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Guitar lessons: common questions.

Should my child start on acoustic or electric?

Either works. Start with the sound your student is excited about, because motivation matters more than the type of guitar. Mr. Garrett teaches both.

Will my child learn songs they actually know?

Yes. Lessons use music your student wants to play, alongside the technique and reading that make those songs possible.

How much should a beginner practice?

Short, regular practice beats one long session. A few focused minutes most days is a good start, and Mr. Garrett sets a specific plan after the trial.
