Mr. Garrett leading a rhythm lesson with young students

What the first month looks like.

Viola lessons begin with posture, the instrument hold and the bow hold. Students learn to draw a full, warm tone on open strings, then start fingering simple melodies. Reading alto clef comes in early and in small steps, so it feels natural instead of strange.

Skills your student builds.

  • Reading alto clef with confidence
  • Bow weight and a full, warm tone
  • Finger placement and playing in tune
  • Playing harmony and inner parts
  • Counting and steady rhythm

Getting the right size viola.

Students should have their own correctly sized viola and bow. Violas are sized in inches by body length rather than in fractions, and arm length decides the right fit. Mr. Garrett can help you understand an appropriate size before you rent or buy.

When to start viola lessons.

Viola suits students who love a deeper, warmer sound. Many students meet it in middle school orchestra, and private lessons alongside orchestra help with alto clef and tone. Violin players can switch to viola, and their skills carry over. Viola is Mr. Garrett’s first instrument.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Viola lessons: common questions.

Is it hard to switch from violin to viola?

Not very. The main changes are reading alto clef and a slightly larger instrument. Most switching students settle in within a few weeks.

Do private lessons help with school orchestra?

Yes. Focused work on alto clef, tone and rhythm helps students keep up in orchestra and prepare for auditions.

Why choose viola?

It has a rich, warm voice, and orchestras are often short on violas, so viola players are welcome in most ensembles.
