Mr. Garrett helping a student play banjo

What the first month looks like.

Lessons start with holding the banjo and pick, tuning, and the basic pick strokes that drive Irish dance music. Students learn their first scale and a simple tune, then work on an even, lively rhythm that makes the music lift.

Skills your student builds.

  • Pick technique, including down-up strokes and triplets
  • Reels, jigs and hornpipes
  • Simple ornaments that give tunes an Irish feel
  • Learning tunes by ear and from notation
  • Phrasing and rhythmic energy

Choosing a tenor banjo.

Students should have their own tenor banjo. Tenor banjos have four strings and are played with a pick. Mr. Garrett recommends a 19-fret tenor banjo; it can be set up in Irish G–D–A–E tuning, an octave below the fiddle. Discuss tuning and instrument options with Mr. Garrett before your first lesson.

When to start tenor banjo lessons.

Tenor banjo suits students from upper elementary through adult who are drawn to Irish and Celtic music. Mandolin and violin players move over easily, since Irish tuning follows the same note layout an octave lower.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Tenor banjo lessons: common questions.

How is tenor banjo different from 5-string banjo?

Tenor banjo has four strings and is played with a pick, mostly for Irish music. The 5-string banjo is fingerpicked or played clawhammer style for bluegrass and old-time music. See our 5-string banjo lessons.

Does my student need to read music?

No. Irish music is often learned by ear, and lessons use both ear learning and notation so students can do either.

Can a mandolin or violin player learn tenor banjo?

Yes. With Irish G–D–A–E tuning, the fingering matches mandolin and violin, an octave lower.
