What the first month looks like.

Students learn to hold the bass, pluck with alternating fingers, and play root notes along with a steady beat. Early lessons spend real time on counting and tempo, because holding the groove is the bass player’s main job. By the end of the first month, most students can play a simple bass line all the way through a song.

Skills your student builds.

  • Fingerstyle plucking and muting unwanted notes
  • Locking in with a drummer or backing track
  • Root–fifth patterns and walking bass lines
  • Reading bass tab and bass clef
  • How bass lines are built from a song’s chords

Choosing a bass and amp.

Students should have their own bass guitar and a small practice amp. Short-scale basses (about 30 inches) are often more comfortable for younger or smaller players. Long-scale (34 inches) is standard for most teens and adults. Talk with Mr. Garrett about a comfortable setup before your first lesson.

When to start bass guitar lessons.

Many students start bass in upper elementary or middle school, once their hands can reach across the longer neck. Guitar players often add bass later. Bass is also a natural fit for students heading toward a school jazz band or a band with friends.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Bass guitar lessons: common questions.

Do we need an amplifier?

Yes. A small practice amp is all you need at home. Mr. Garrett can help you choose one that fits your space.

Can a guitar player switch to bass?

Yes. Hand skills and chord knowledge carry over. The new work is the bass player’s role: steady time, locking in with the drums, and building lines from the chords.

Will bass lessons help in a school band?

Yes. Reading bass clef and keeping steady time both carry over to school jazz bands and other ensembles.
