Mr. Garrett guiding a young student at a piano at home

What the first month looks like.

Students find their way around the keyboard, learn finger numbers and a relaxed hand position, and start reading simple rhythms and notes. Most beginners play short pieces with each hand and begin putting hands together within the first few weeks.

Skills your student builds.

  • Reading treble and bass clef
  • Two-hand coordination
  • Chords and accompaniment patterns
  • Counting and steady rhythm
  • Scales and good technique habits

Piano or keyboard at home.

Students should have a piano or a suitable keyboard at home for lessons and practice. If you are buying a keyboard, look for a full-size 88-key instrument with weighted or touch-sensitive keys and a sustain pedal, so the technique learned at home carries over to an acoustic piano. Discuss your existing instrument or purchase plans with Mr. Garrett.

When to start piano lessons.

Piano is a strong first instrument because every note is laid out in front of the student, which makes reading music and understanding chords easy to see. Mr. Garrett generally works with students from second grade up, and adult beginners are welcome.

Younger students are considered individually; share your student’s age when you inquire.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Piano lessons: common questions.

Is a keyboard OK, or do we need a piano?

A keyboard works well to start, especially a full-size 88-key model with weighted or touch-sensitive keys and a sustain pedal.

Will my child learn to read music?

Yes. Reading is built in from the first lessons, in small steps, alongside playing pieces your child enjoys.

Does piano help with other instruments?

Yes. Seeing notes and chords laid out on the keyboard makes music theory easier for any instrument a student plays later.
